Take Me Home Country Roads - cowritten with Bill Danoff - was Denver's first Top 10 single as a solo artist following a short time in small folk groups. Danoff had originally written the tune to Johnny Cash's tune with a focus on Johnny Cash, however Denver knew from the first moment he listened to the earlier versions that it was going to be an instant success. Danoff recorded the track just a few days later after performing it to crowds of enthusiastic fans on the streets of Washington D.C.
